My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that teaching should begin with respect. When students are respected, a positive learning environment is nourished and communication pathways are created. Once respect is established, optimal instruction lies in the teacher’s relationship with the students combined with knowledge and use of a variety of learning modes to engage, assess and enrich learning within the classroom.
In my experience as a student through elementary, junior high, senior high and post-secondary, I have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of classrooms which have shaped my outlook on teaching, the process of learning and the classroom environment. It is my philosophy to provide a positive classroom environment, where students are empowered to be self-confident, self-aware, empathetic and knowledgable.
I aspire to engage students by providing opportunities which can assist them to explore, and the self-assurance to pursue, their dreams. In order to ensure this I maintain high, yet reasonable, expectations for my students. It is vital that each student is formatively assessed on a regular basis. Through ongoing assessment, learning and instruction can be guided for the continuous acquisition of reachable goals, creating a solid framework for constructing new goals reaching beyond prior expectations.
Utilizing diverse methods for student’s to apply their knowledge and experience will provide a well-rounded environment for pursuing the dynamics of learning.
“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. ”
- Alvin Toffler
In my classroom community, student’s are encouraged to: have their own voice, collaborate with others, respect one another, implement their skills and talents, think critically, pursue their own solutions to problems and explore with abandon. With this foundation, I believe that students will have the tools to successfully navigate their educational journey and beyond.
